RAMBLIN’ with Helen... |
Ramblin’ with Helen: Our “visit” this month may be a bit short, due to the fact that I must get it to our editor prior to Oct. 26th, the day I leave for my annual “vacation” to attend the 139th Order of the Eastern Star Grand Chapter Session in Saratoga, something I’ve done each year since 1989, and prior to that went in 1956, 1962 and 1967, the years that I served as Matron in our local chapter. I received my 60 year pin and certificate this year, so you can see that Eastern Stars has been a big part of my life for many years.
When I received the dues for our long-time member, Ellen Owen, they were sent to me by her sister Grace Maker, who wrote that Ellen is doing better, still uses a walker due to her broken leg, and her short-term memory is gone due to her head hitting the mirror when she had her car accident last fall. Ellen’s address is: Sedwick Heights Adult Home, 1100 James St., Syracuse, NY. 13203, and I am sure she would enjoy some mail.
Another faithful and long time member, “Soc” Nellis sent me a book of stamps and also enclosed a SASE when he sent his dues. He also wrote his usual interesting letter, telling about his wife Jan’s brother, along with other of his family members being flooded out by Hurricane Ike in Orange, TX. Soc recently celebrated his 86th birthday and is so thankful that his mind is still good, (at least he feels it is), and folks I can attest that it is, by the well written, interesting letter he sends each year. Soc, thanks for your letter, the enclosures, your kind words regarding my efforts with the Ramblin’, and our thoughts are with both you and Jan for the recent passing of relatives and friends, including those age 46 and 63 – far to young to be taken from you.
This past week, I received two beautiful packets of blank cards that Jan picked up when she was shopping, and before that, I had received some blank ones from Ann DeForge and John Gallant, who also included some sympathy, get-well, thank you and “Thinking Of You” cards. THANKS to all of you, and assure you they will be used.
Right after the Oct. newsletter came out, Vernon Loucks called and said they have some cards, and will bring them to the “Jammin’ for Joy” benefit on Nov. 2nd. Thanks to Shirley Stevens, who has offered to come and get me, I plan to be there, and will tell you all about it next month. Pat McLaughlin sent a check for Joy, and asked me to get it to someone, and Pat it was done. They were so sorry they couldn’t make it, but wanted to help make the endeavor a success.
Some of our CNYBA members have made the newspapers this past month – a nice picture and write-up of the Diamond Someday Band, who played at Marcellus on Oct. 18th appeared in the special entertainment section of the Auburn Citizen.
Folks, please mark your calendars right now and plan to attend CNYBA’s NOVERMBER SHOWCASE, featuring BILL WHITE and the WHITE PINE BAND from Canada, and a local favorite, LAKE EFFECT BLUEGRASS BAND (Neil Shortsleff is a member of this band, and a long-time member and supporter) on SAT., NOV. 15th – 2 to 5 p.m. at Wacky Wyatt’s, 85 E. Genesee St., Baldwinsville, NY. Adm. Is only $8.00 for members, and $10.00 for others. These showcases are just one of the ways our new slate of officers and board members hope will bring our treasury to where once again we can sponsor our own Bluegrass Festival, maybe in 2009 IF we all support them.
I received my CD “Out Behind the Barn” of the late Andy Pawlenko’s favorite songs, and it is fantastic! This would make a wonderful Christmas gift for yourself or someone – just send $12. to Deanne Hubbard, 1060 Co. Rt. 85, Oswego, NY. 13126. I am positive you won’t regret it!
Last month I mentioned about my donation of postage to return renewals, cards, etc., and a big THANK YOU to the following who sent stamps, or a check made out to me for postage: “Soc” Nellis, Ray Crouch, Dean & Joanne Bartholomew and Sharon Foultz. These generous donations will most certainly take care of many renewals, cards and the Christmas Cards I will be sending to those members who are confined to their homes or in nursing homes, etc. as I know mail is always welcome.
I hope that the “Music Jam Session” at the Chuck and Sharon Foultz Barn on Fri., Oct. 24th was a huge success, and Sharon, please email me a report to include in our Dec. visit. Speaking of Sharon, I had an email from her asking for prayers for her granddaughter who had to have cancer cells removed. Please keep both Sharon and her granddaughter in your prayers and that the surgeon was able to remove them all.
I saw George and Bibianne in our local diner on Fri. evening, Oct. 10th, and he said they were going south in two weeks, so am sure as you read this they are enjoying the warm weather. Donna Walter called and told me that her surgery went fine, no further surgery is needed and they were getting ready to close their beautiful summer home and head to their winter home in Lillian, AL. I’ve tried several times this past week to call her, and receiving no answer, assume they also should be enjoying warm weather.
That terrible word SNOW has already appeared in our forecast, and it is way to early (at least for me) to do so! One of those beautiful fall days we enjoyed last week, Ray and Joy Crouch came to visit me, and as always, Joy has a very positive outlook on her up-coming radiation treatments. We all know she has a strong faith in prayer, so I ask you all to keep her in your daily prayers that the treatments will do what they are supposed to do, and Joy just keep that faith and your smile.
Well, I guess this takes care of all the notes, emails, etc. I have saved for this visit, and please keep them coming so I will have something to either enlighten or bore you with in Dec. I just got a message from Shirley Stevens, that our Vice-President, Bill Light is scheduled for open-heart surgery on November 3rd. Bill is, and always has been a very supportive member of CNYBA, so I ask you to please keep him, Donna and their family in your prayers that his surgery is a success, and he has a speedy return to good health. Please send a card or note to: 211 Allen St., E. Syracuse, NY. 13057. Give him some time, and then am sure he would welcome calls at: 315-463-4186 or email: wlight1@twcny.rr.com. You are in our thoughts and prayers Bill.
Once again, I must remind you that if your date is circled on your newsletter, your dues are due now. There are still several that were due in Sept. and Oct., and now Nov. ones are also due. PLEASE check your label, and SEND ME YOUR DUES if it is circled. I truly believe our officers and board members are doing their best to lead us in the right direction, and YOUR MEMBERSHIPS are needed to help them continue this trend. SEND THEM NOW.
I hope each of you have a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING spent with family and friend, and until our next visit – remember: You should always leave loved ones with loving words, as it might be the last time you see them.
