As the past CNYBA President, it has been a memorable year. I can't express enough appreciation for support from the officers, board of directors, and members in accomplishments which we can all be proud of. A number of improved business practices were implemented, the festival committee did a super job, including significant improvements to the festival grounds and electrical systems and..of course my own "pet project"..our own CNYBA Silver Anniversary CD. Many thanks to the 80 musicians who donated their great songs, to Bill Knowlton for the wonderful liner notes, to Al Worthen at Mt. Music (Old Forge) for providing expert engineering support, and to Joe LaMay for fantastic graphic layout.
None of these good things happen without countless hours of dedicated contributions from many. As I look around and contemplate (that's what lame duck presidents do, you know), I see many groups of every persuasion polarized into inaction for a variety of reasons and was saddened to hear of the last festival, for a favorite Bluegrass Association of mine, with 30 years of Festivals behind them, throw in the towel. I only mention this as a reminder, to us all, that our Association exists to promote Bluegrass music. More hands lighten the load, and pettiness needs to be overlooked, so pitch in. To the new officers, friends I've made over the past year, my salute. Bob Hayden, the reigns are yours, and in good hands.
Thanks,
Carl Stump

Once again the CNYBA sponsored a most enjoyable and successful festival. With new electrical outlets, our campers enjoyed many comforts and dependable service.
Through the donation of many hours of time at the Gate, raffles, memorabilia, flea market, popcorn machine, etc, our volunteers did a super job making our festival run smoothly and efficiently.
The sun certainly shone upon us again, but the " big tent" kept the fans shaded. The ones who enjoyed the sun sat on the lawn.
Our bands showed their incredible professional with fans reacting with positive response and shouting for encores on many occasions.
Our emcees did a great job keeping the audience informed on all events. Vernon Loucks, was extremely pleased with the dedication of our new stage to him and his wife, Olive.
The childrenís program, well handled by Suzanne and Carl Stump was a new attraction this year and a very successful one. The children had a great time with their scavenger hunt and other activities and I heard that their Kazoo band was tops.
The Youth Talent contest was entered by four entertaining groups and all were rewarded for their fine efforts.
Congratulations to two recipients of the Irene Thurston Award, made possible by Frank "Bill" Szabo: Helen Weldon and William Knowlton. Also congratulations to the three recipients of the Bud Artlip award, made possible by Lois Artlip: Andy Pawlenko, Neil Shortslef and Peter Carr. .
Congratulations to Jackie Kelley who won "our" quilt, which had so much love sewed into each block.
A nice variety of vendors offered different wares for our selection.
We were successful again! Many THANKS to all who made this possible. YOU did a Great job.
Thayle
Carl Stump sent via email the following: "Congratulations on a very successful festival. All the hard work, by so many, got the job done in handy fashion."
Did everyone see the nice t-shirts people were wearing at our festival with Andy Pawlenko and the Smokey Boys on it? Nice picture..
APOLOGY: I apologize for getting your newsletter to you late - my intentions were finish organizing it on Sunday, to take the master to the printers on Monday the 26th, which would have given me ample time to get it put together and have it to you in plenty of time before our September meeting. Unfortunately, I went to the hospital on Sunday, spent three days there, had a couple of days where I needed to take it easy. Same old leg problemómaybe I will make it to our Christmas Party this year. That would be nice! Thanks to Helen Weldon who let friends know I was "laid up" and thanks to these friends for the much appreciated cards. Thayle

Ramblin' with Helen By Helen Weldon
It has been a long time since our last visit, and hope you won't be bored by the time you finish with the news I have to tell. I am going to try and keep things in date order as I received them. There was a mention in the July/August issue regarding Bibianne Bouthelette having open heart surgery on July 5th. I had a nice visit with her after she returned home, and talked to her today (Aug. 21st). She is doing fine and will start therapy after her stress test on Sept. 9th. During our conversation she told me that George Hall was at the dentist to get a cavity filled - the first one in his lifetime! They were at our festival on Sunday and plan to go to Lodi this weekend. We're so glad to hear that you are doing so well, Bibianne. On July 11th our dear little Olive Loucks had heart catherization and on July 16th she had open heart surgery. I talked with Vernon on the 17th and he said she was sitting up! and was very talkative. I have kept in touch with them and had a nice visit with her on the 20th. She said she is gaining slowly but has no patience as it is taking too long! She went to church for the first time on the 18th which sure seemed good. Recently I received this note: "Dear Helen, I want to thank each one for the cards individually and as groups. Everyone (especially you) has been so thoughtful. Our bluegrass friends have been very faithful. Love, Olive Loucks". Olive, because "you are you" we all wanted to remember you and thanks for your kind words. Oliveís sister who is 87 and lived in PA passed away during the week of August 11-17th and expressions of sympathy were sent to her.
Emma Teachout called to tell me that Alice Hilton, Hugh;s widow, had cancer in lymph node in neck and was taking a new pill in place of chemo. While talking, Emma told she had lost her last sibling - the youngest brother - the end of June. I talked with Emma on the 20th and she said the doctor feels that the cancer has shrunk a little, so hope it is doing what it is supposed to do. However, other problems have developed and Alice is scheduled for some surgery soon. Please keep her in your prayers. Emma recently made a "fast trip" to the hospital due to a rapid heart beat, but tests showed no reason for it, so was sent home. Rex and Emma celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on 8/21 and a card was sent wishing them many more happy years together. I knew, but had forgotten that their anniversary date was the same as mine - only 6 years earlier.
I knew prior to my visit with you in the July/August issue that Mary Carr was going to take a trip to Alaska, but promised that I wouldn't say anything about it until she had gone and returned home. She reports a wonderful time, and Mary we are all so happy that you were able to go and enjoy it.
Our festival was a success. Thanks to my daughter, Thayle and I enjoyed Saturday with you all. Sincere thanks go to Marion LaMont, Lois Artlip and Betty Jane Windhauser for the cards; and also Betty, thanks for your donation of money toward postage. I have a good supply of blank cards for now. Mary Phillips told me about the passing of our member Billy Eldridge in the spring. He had just retired, looking forward to attending festivals, etc., when he found out that he had liver cancer and was gone in less than two months. I wrote to his widow, expressing our sympathy, and so sorry that we didn't know about it sooner.
I am sure a friendly note to Mrs. Billy Eldridge, 2486 So. Rt.7, Oswego, NY 13126 would be appreciated.
I have to say the shock, which turned out to be the "highlight" of my time spent at the festival was when Carl Stump asked me to go to the stage with with him, where I was presented with one of the Irene Thurston awards! Congratulations to Bill Knowlton who also received one. As you know, for several years I've chaired the awards committee, and worked with Bill and Lois in choosing the recipients, and folks I know now I should have never stepped down after last year's festival! However, what a great honor, and it is hung on the wall with the Frank Saplin award in memory of Dick, and the plaque presented to Dick and I from the Lake Delta Kawanis Club many years ago. To Bill Szabo - my sincere thanks for your insistence that I be given one, and that you were there to present it. We not only share love for our association and its music, but fraternal friendship as Irene belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star, and you are a Mason. You are truly a very special friend.
The following is a copy of an email received from Bill Knowlton: "To the Officers, Board Members, Club members and Festival Volunteers of CNYBA: I was very honored to be one of the recipients of the 2002 Irene Thurston Award at your Apple Valley Bluegrass Festival this year. Irene was a dear lady and a longtime friend of mine which makes the award all the more meaningful to me. (Please relay my personal thanks too, to Irene's close friend and companion Bill Szabo for his part in presenting this great award). I also appreciated seeing the mention in your festival program of the 30th Annual Bluegrass Ramble Picnic. It was a great success and I was delighted to meet and greet many members of the CNYBA who managed to be with us Sunday after a weekend at LaFayette. Again, thanks so much for the Irene Thurston Award. It will be cherished for a long time to come. BILL KNOWLTON."
Congratulations are also due to Andy Pawlenko, Neil Shortslef and the very surprised Pete Carr, all of whom received the Bud Artlip Award for 2002. All three are most deserving, and thanks to Lois Artlip for choosing them.
Expressions of sympathy were extended to Bill Light on the passing of his mother on August 9th in Mass. Thru an email we learned that she was surrounded by family, friends and went peacefully. Bill requests prayers for her soul. Please take time to send a note or card to: 211 Allen St., East Syracuse, NY 13057. His email address is: wlight1@twcny.rr.com (That is a number one after wlight). Bill is our new secretary and will assume his duties in September. You and yours are in our thoughts and prayers Bill, and hope knowing we care will help ease the loss for you.
Folks, once again Iíd like to remind you that you don't have to cut up your newsletter to send your renewal. If there are changes, just put them on a piece of paper. Thank you Stuart Johnson for your most generous donation included with your renewal. With the postage increase it will indeed help.
I received a long letter from Wren Doubler after the 25th Uncle Dave Macon Days, where the Macon family was honored. She said despite the rain and mud, all had a good time. Their son John received a plaque for being the only family member to attend and help with all 25 years - he was 16 when they started in 1978. Their son Duke, who was so ill, was able to attend and he says he feels fine. Prayers were certainly answered for him.
Well folks, I guess that takes care of all my notes I had made for this visit and hope to see many of you at our meeting in Cato on Sept. 8th. Come and support our new officers as they plan for our new year of activities, and the 5th Annual Apple Valley Bluegrass Festival in 2003. Until then, remember: You never get a second chance to make a good impression.
Helen
