NEWS and TIDBITS for SEPTEMBER 2001

We need suggestions from our membership where we can hold our monthly Jamborees. This place should be able to accommodate around 100 people. be available to us from 2-6 PM on the 4th Sunday of every month except for December when we hold our Christmas Party on the 2nd Sunday and in May for the third Sunday because the 4th is Memorial Day weekend. We also need a place that serves food and beverages and hopefully the amount we spend there can be applied to the cost for use of the room. Remember we do have people coming from all different directions, so finding a place easily accessible would be appreciated too. If anyone has an idea, please let a board member know. Thank you. Ramblin' with Helen By Helen Weldon

I don't know about you folks, but I can hardly believe our summer is almost gone, and it's time to drop in for an "update" on some of our members and events taken place since our last visit in July.

The benefit for George and Betty Hall's granddaughter, Amy VanHorn went well, but like most endeavors, could have had a better attendance. Our association's donation of a years membership as a door prize was won by Edith Frisbie of Oswego. Many of you may remember her as she managed Marion's Country Gold where we held some minijams a couple of years ago. She is 86 years young, plays guitar and sings the old-time country songs.

I had a call from Betty Hall asking me to include a Special Thanks from her to all of you who called, sent cards and remembered her in your prayers. Betty is now home after spending time in the hospital for respritory problem and while there fell and fractured her hip. Her first "outing" was to the grocery store in Hannibal on 8/14 and she says her appetite is good. She also wants to express all of their family's thanks to all whoo contributed, attended or helped in amy way to make the Amy VanHorn benefit a success. Due to complications, Amy's transplant has had to be delayed and is scheduled for late September. Please keep the Hall and VanHorn families in your thoughts and prayers.

Thayle's visit to the doctor started with a stress test and ended up with a heart catherization. No repair work needed yet. She was "overjoyed" with the news.

Due to the generosity of our out-going president, Ed Campbell, she and I were able to "camp" together in one of his trailers at our 3rd Annual CNYBA festival. Thanks Ed you are a most caring and generous gentleman. The weather was beautiful and am sure everyone who attended had a wonderful time. The big attraction was the debut of our "Silver Anniversary Bluegrass Sampler" CD. Folks, this CD is one every member should want to own. It has cuts from 22 groups and as I listened to mine, I could picture each player and/or group. I'm sure elsewhere in this newsletter, details will be available as to how to obtain one. If not, please call me (315-626-2603) or email:helwel80@hotmail.com and I assure you I will see that you get one. Believe me, it is a MUST...

Recently, Peggy Vogel fell while trying to get into a car and hurt her leg. She is now using a walker and know that mail to: Towpath Towers, Apt 310, 100 Rochester St., Fulton, NY 13069 would be appreciated.

Expressions of sympathy were sent to Peter Hoysic on the passing of his sister Anna who used to come to our meetings and jams with him and Betty. Anna had the same "wit" and "outgoing personality" that Peter has, and I know her loss in another void in his life.

Joyce Rafferty emailed me that "Dusty" Bevins had hernia surgery, come home from the hospital on 7/21 and is doing fine. She also told me while attending Rick & Carol's festival, that Andy announced that the reason Dick DeNeve wasn't playing with his band and was going to see a surgeon. No surgery was necessary, and with rest he was able to play one set with Andy and the Smokey Hollow Boys on Fri. nite of the festival, but was not able tyo be there Sat., when it was announced that he was one of the recipient's of th 1st "Bud Artlip" Award. Bob Klaben who arrived later, was also given a plaque by Lois. Congratulations to both - very well deserving choices.

Sympathy was also extended to Betsy Keough whose sister Joan from Cortland passed away in August.

Our member and friend, George Reese, is still having much trouble with his leg and foot from his injury in the late fall. It apparently isn't healing properly and has had some x-rays taken recently. Once he receives the results of the x-rays he will let us know. Until then he could use some positive thoughts and encouragement. Please send them to: George Reese, 410 Meadowbrook Drive, Fulton, NY 13069 or email him at bluegrassgr@yahoo.com.

When I got the Mehlenbacker's renewal, Bert wrote that they were both doing fine now, but almost lost Alice this winter with double pneumonia. I saw and talked to both at the festival and can report they both looked good.

Remember in January I told you when Loren Teachout renewed the Salmon River Boys band membership that he said he was going to be married in July - well it was on July 14th when he took the lovely Florence Gates as his bride. I had a nice visit with his Mom and she said the wedding was beautiful. Congratulations and Best Wishes to the both of you, Loren.

In the July newsletter I told you about Uncle Dave Macon's greatgrandson Duke being diagnosed with tongue cancer. I've kept in contact with his Mother and in a letter of 8/7 she said his radiation treatments are done, but due to the damage from then, eating is a problem. He is on a 90 day disability leave from his job, and until he can swallow he is fed Ensure thru a stomach tube. Please keep the Dubler family in your prayers.

I would also ask you to keep Ardy Pawlenko in your prayers as she takes her cancer treatments. On a happy note Mary Phillips told me that after 11 long years her husband Ted has been released from his doctor with a cancer free report.

Folks, prayers are answered! It has been a busy two months and if I neglected to remember someone it was because I didn't know. It is only thru you folks that I hear of ones that should be remembered. Now before I get fired for ramblin and taking up too much space, I must congratulate Ray Crouch and Thayle Phair on being the chosen ones this year for the annual "Irene Thurston" award. Can any of you believe that Thayle was speechless???? Well, she was and I hope someone got a picture of her when Bill Szabo said "The lady with the camera don't sit down, we want you on stage" - it was one of those priceless moments! Both of these recipients are very deserving of this recognition.

Be sure to plan on attending our meeting in Cato on Sept 9 when our new officers take over - they need your suport and decisions must be made regarding the plans being made underway for our 4th Annual CNYBA Festival in 2002. My tribute to the out-going officers will be in the Oct. "Ramblin".

Until next time, remember: Life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes!!

Helen

FESTIVAL 2001

Our 3rd Annual Bluegrass Festival was blessed with great weather, wonderful people in attendance and sensational music. What else could anyone want?

Along with being our 3RD Annual Festival, it was also the 25th Anniversary of CNYBA. To celebrate the occasion Carl Stump and associated produced a memorable keepsake CD. With a lot of work it was made available for sale at our festival.

Thursday night "Open Mic" brought us several groups who kept us entertained for the entire evening. Starting out was Bob on guitar, Betty on guitar and Ray on bass; they sang and played several old-tyme country songs. Next up were Jason Johnson on banjo, Mike on guitar and vocals, Maurice Lovell on mandolin and Martin Lovell on bass, stimulating us with many bluegrass tunes. Next, Janice Chaffee on guitar, Carl Stump on guitar sang and played many memorable tunes. Next Norm Hasman joined Jason, Mike, Maurice and Martin and together entertained us with a variety of good songs and instrumentals. Tom Russell and Jacqui McCarthy joined Jason, Martin and Maurice for their vocal and instrumental presentations. This group of musicians from the Marcellus jam session are a truly talented group of people. Closing out the evening with their favorite tunes was Laurie, Joe LaMay, Sherri Reese and Dave.

Friday night progran was opened up with the "Misfits" consisting of Jason Johnson on hot banjo, Martin Lovell on bass, joined by others and got us in "the mood" for the regular program. Another group consisting of Larry Knapp, Rod Macomber, Dean Bartholomew, Jason Johnson, Martin Lovell kept our toes tapping with their instrumental presentations and songs. LOW PROFILE from Virginia (dressed in tan suits) brought rousing applaud from the audience after their professional presentation of traditional bluegrass music. The central Chapter of the NYS FIDDLERS filled our stage with players and they kept our toes tapping and hands clapping with their many fiddle tunes. They also held a square dance afterward in the big barn.

Ron and Nancy ONESONG were next to perform and as usual, kept the audience involved and very happy with their variety of musical attributes. Last for the evening, but not least, was ANDY PAWLENKO and the SMOKEY HOLLOW BOYS. Their accumulation of songs ana jokes brought much joy to the audience after 42 years, Andy and Neil make it sound easy.

Saturday's festivities began with STUMP HOLLOW BLUEGRASS BAND setting the pace for the day with their moas enjoyable musical presentations. Next to appear was LOW PROFILE from Virginia (in gray suits) filling the air with traditional bluegrass music and Yankee jokes. At noon we held our second Youth Talent contest with three entries competing. The winners were Molly Musselwhite (age 9) on banjo, her sister Morgan (age 11) on fiddle. They played Cripple Creek and played and sang a gospel tune real bluegrass. Their Mom Cindy assisted on guitar. The second place winner was 6 year old Nicole Sacco who sang (using a Kareoke machine) some Patsy Kline songs Crazy and Blue.

Thank you to Sam Fox from PA who donated an additional $20 for the contestants. Our 6th place winner was shy, little (but big for his age), Carl Stump (age 9, but almost 10 his hair was slicked back and parted in the middle such a cute boy). He played "Twinkle-twinkle" on his little homemade fiddle. Carl won a dish and Andy Pawlenko's great-aunt's peanuts (if you don't remember Andy's story about his Great-aunt's peanuts, ask him sometime). The presentation of awards was next: Don "Farmer" and Nancy Brown were presented with a memorable picture of them by Bob Archambo for their dedication to bluegrass music. Lois Artlip offered, for the first time, the "Bud Artlip Award" for Dick deNeve and Bob Klaben for their dedication and presentation of bluegrass music. Bill Szabo, for the 3rd year, presented the "Irene Thurston Award" to Ray crouch and Thayle Phair for their dedication and time devoted to bluegrass. Back to the entertainment "THUNDER MT. BLUEGRASS from Mass. presented us with their stimulating traditional bluegrass music. This was their first time playing at our festival.

ANDY PAWLENKO and the SMOKEY HOLLOW BOYS played two times more during the day/evening, ONE SONG played two more times, LOW PROFILE (dressed in navy blue suits) played one more time, STUMP HOLLOW BLUEGRASS played one time more ant THUNDER MT. BLUEGRASS played one more time. All the music was phenominal! The music talent was unsurpassed!

Sunday, a beautiful, sunny day, and last day of our wonderful festival began with ANDY PAWLENKO and the SMOKEY HOLLOW BOYS singing and playing their inspirational gospel tunes and even a couple of jokes included. Andy also dedicated a special gospel to his wife Ardie, sitting in the front row. Next up was THUNDER MT. BLUEGRASS with their collection of breathtaking gospels. Ending our festivities was STUMP HOLLOW BLUEGRASS playing and singing their gospels which inspired our deepest feelings.
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO MADE OUR FESTIVAL SUCCESSFUL!

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Thanks from Thayle: Due to the fact that I was so overwhelmed when receiving the Irene Thurston Award, I failed to state what an honor it was to receive it. Knowing Irene and Bill for so many years made it a double honor. Thanks again for this great treasure.
