TO ALL MEMBERS OF CNYBA; On your address label is a date (ex: 5/024/0212-02, etc) which shows when your one year membership needs to be renewed. Your date will be highlighted to remind you that your renewal is due. We will continue to send your newsletter for two months past your due date"after that, your name will be removed from our mailing list. I ususally try to send a note inside your newsletter to remind you that you are IMPORTANT to us and that it is time to renew. Sometimes I can't send a note because of the weight of the newsletter. Thank you for being part of CNYBA. Thayle
Please check your name, address and date to make sure it is accurate. My computer no longer works and my daughter graciously allows me to use hers. I had to retype our membership list of 287 members twice. Once because I couldn't alphabetize new additions and twice to do it correctly. Thank heavens for Helen Weldon for editing my lists and emailing the corrections. Hopefully they are all correct now. If someone who was supposed to receive a newsletter did not, please let Helen or me know and we will make the proper adjustments. Thank you

We thank Nick Parro, county legislator, for presenting to Bob Hayden, our Vice-President, a check for $750 which was applied for through the Cultural and Arts Resources Council . Bob drove to Syracuse where he was presented with this check. Thanks, Bob. This money will be used to hire 40 West to play for our festival.
CONGRATULATIONS to Joe LaMay and Sherri Reese for being at the "right place at the right time."
On April 10 Joe and Sherri were at the studios of WSM in Nashville, TN to observe The Delaney Brothers playing live on the Opry Stars Showcase and, the next night at the world famous Station Inn (both appearances by the Delaney's were fantastic). Joe and Sherri drove to Western Kentucky with the goal of visiting the "Old Homestead"the birthplace and childhood home of Bill Monroe. Their intention was to drop off a CD containing Joe's song "The Old Man Has Gone" written in memory of Bill Monroe. Upon arriving, Joe and Sherri witnessed the filming of the Cumberland Highlanders (bluegrass band) on the porch of the "Old Homestead", for their Cable-TV show on The Outdoor Channel. Also, the curator of the home/producer of the TV show, Campbell Mercer, was filming an interview with former members of Bill Monroe's band. After the filming was completed (hours later), Joe spoke with Campbell Mercer and explained to him that he had written a song about Bill Monroe. Joe asked if he would please take his demo and listen to it and to let him know if he liked it. Campbell Mercer said "Well - why not just sing it to me now?" "I'll just film you and put you on the show." Joe and Sherri went to the van, got their guitars stood on Bill Monroe's porch and was filmed singing Joe's song. One of the filmings was aimed at the CNY audience to attend the Rosine Bluegrass Festival in Sept.
Joe just received confirmation that their performance will be shown sometime in May. The name of the show is The Cumberland Highlanders Show and it is on the Outdoor Channel. It plays three times a week: Tues. at 3 AM, Thurs. at noon and Sat. at 6:30PM. In May, Joe and Sherri will also have a new CD called "Heaven".

Ramblin' with Helen By Helen Weldon
Well folks, our "Roller Coaster" of weather from winter, to spring, to summer and back to winter sure keeps one guessing! I will be glad when it settles down to just one season for awhile, and sure hope we have no more earthquakes.....wonder how many; of you felt it, as I slept thru it. Since our last visit, some of our members have lost loved ones.......
Expressions of sympathy were sent to Dick DeNeve on the passing of his dear mother Mary L. DeNeve on April 1st. She was known and loved by many of us as she was Dick's #1 fan and attended many of our events. Her services were held on April 5th with burial at St. Mary's Cemetery in Baldwinsville. Contributions in her memory can be sent to Alzheimers Assoc. of Central New York, 441 W. Kirkpatrick St., Syracuse, NY 13204. I received a very "touching" letter from Dick, and want to share parts of it with you - "Dear Helen, I would like to express my deep appreciation for all those members who expressed their condolences for my Mom's recent death, by cards, or in their thoughts or in their prayers. Many folks in the association knew and remembered her. Mom liked her bluegrass, even with her Alzheimer's disease. One of the first signs of her disease was at a Bob Paisley concert. She was usually a shy and retiring person, but when Bob had some pickers from the audience come up and join him in "Mama Don't Allow", she strode to the front of the crowd with determination to inform him that THIS Mama allowed, and encouraged the music he was playing. This past December Andy Pawlenko's band played at the Veteran's Hospital, and afterward went to the home Mom was in. She sat in her wheelchair between Andy and me, but her eyes and attention were on him as he was the star singer. I was only chopped liver until the set was over! I have a lot more memories of her and many members do too. She was a good woman. We will miss her a lot. Thanks again. Dick DeNeve." Yes, Dick, we know you will miss her, and we will too. She is now in "Bluegrass Heaven" enjoying the wonderful music I'm sure our dear departed members are keeping alive.
Our long-time former member Martie Rowe has joined those "listeners" upon her passing on April 7th in Florida. John VanDusen called and asked me to let you know her husband Gillie wanted us to know that committal services for her will be May 24th at the cemetery in Fruit Valley near Oswego. As the date gets closer, John will let me know the time; so please call him at 315-252-0610 or me at 315-626-2603. I received a "Thank You" card written by Marty and mailed March 29th expressing her thanks for remembering her with cards - so you can see folks, taking a minute to send a card does make a difference.
I received a phone call from Donna Walter and she is doing much better, able to walk longer distances, and looking forward to seeing us all at our festival. She and Bob will be heading North soon as it is now geeting too hot for her now She will continue her medical care here, after they arrive..
I attended the funeral of our dear friend Hugh Hilton, of the Salmon River Boys on Fri., April 12th at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home in Pulaski; coming away confirming what I knew - he was loved by so many. It was reported over 500 signed the register for calling hours, and the funeral service ended with the band doing Hugh's favorite, "When The Wagon Was New". I have copies of the tribute his niece Linda Teachout Crandall read during the service, along with the one Loren Teachout wrote and sent to Bill Knowlton. I plan to share these in future "Ramblin's" as a fitting tribute to one who touched us all thru the music of The Salmon River Boys, our only remaining charter band membership. Contributions in Hugh's memory can be sent to: Oswego County Hospice, Box 102, Oswego, NY 13126. I know his widow Alice Hilton needs notes to brighten her lonely days at: 316 Falls Rd., Richland, NY 13144.
Also had a note from Alice and Bert Mehlenbacher telling me that after reading about Marty's illness in our April newsletter they went to see her on April 13th, but unfortunately it was too late. I'm sure folks that that trip and phone call later to Gillie meant a lot to him.
Mike Bonczak's procrastination finally caught up with him....when he sent his renewal he included a schedule of the bluegrass music on WSCP and asked me to URGE EVERYONE to SUPPORT these efforts by letting the station know we are listening. Send your letter today to: WSCP, Pulaski NY 13142. The schedule is listed elsewhere in the newsletter under "AM-FM". Today's economy dictates what survives and what gets chopped, so let your views be known.
Well folks I hope the next visit can contain some happier news, and if you have something to share please get it to me early. I am leaving on May 23rd to spend 9 days with my granddaughter and her family in Rhode Island during which I'll be attending the presentation of her PH Degree from Brown University.
Until then, remember: The only thing you owe life is to become the best you can be.
Helen
