RAMBLIN’ with Helen...

Ramblin' with Helen: Two reminders this week made me aware that our winter season is upon us: waking up to the ground all WHITE, and receiving my first CHRISTMAS CARD! Longtime member Homer Reynolds sent it, hoping it would be my first, but included all the other holidays in his letter. He expressed his desire to receive our newsletter monthly, but would welcome it anytime. Speaking of the newsletter, for now it will continue to be published monthly, as the board was not ready to amend the bylaws at their Nov. meeting. Not as many forms were returned as I would have liked, but out of 36 received, there were only 3 who wanted it quarterly, 1 bi-monthly, 32 monthly, 8 by email, and 28 by mail – truly the trend I expected.

When Gert Rozelle, (another longtime member) renewed, she wrote she had made a big decision this fall. In the spring she is going to sell her home, and hopes to move into a trailer park overlooking the W.P Dam. This park brings in new trailers and rents them. She has been on a list for senior housing for 3 years and still #12 on the list. Gert also sent a donation towards postage , and thanks to her, along with Eletha and Francis White and John Atman who did the same. A big THANK YOU to Ted and Mary Phillips and B. Joanne Baxter for their enclosure of books of stamps with their renewals, and I assure you they will be used for returning dues cards, sending cards and other CNYBA mailings that I do.

Carol McGinley was the 50/50 winner at our Nov. meeting, and returned $20. of her winnings back to the treasury. – THANK YOU CAROL! Bill Knowlton sent an email (too late for the Nov. newsletter) telling of the passing of Lynn Oliver, the former operator of the Norwich N.Y. Bluegrass Festival, on Oct. 25 th , his 60 th wedding anniversary. He stated the Norwich Festival had enormous appeal to the Northeastern “snowbirds” who associated with the Olivers in Florida during the winter months. Donations may be made to the Alzhiemers Association.

Expressions of sympathy were sent from CNYBA to Ron and Rose DePeyster on the passing of Ron's sister Rose on Nov. 12 th in Syracuse . WELCOME to new members Ronald Theel and Deanne Hubbard, (Andy's daughter), who said she joined to keep up on the news of those who meant so much to her Dad and Mom.

The first Breakfast Buffet was a huge success – serving 50! Chef John Crouch and our president are to be commended on the super job they did, along with help from Sharon Foultz and Kathy Kinney and her granddaughter. The initial cost of supplies resulted in a small loss, BUT future ones will show a profit if all continue to come out and support them.. PLEASE DO.

Dennis Crawford has been appointed Youth Program Chairman and can assure you that you will be hearing a lot about our president's endeavor to get knowledge of our music into the schools all over central New York , acquaint them with musical instruments and instruction on them. If you can help, please do so when asked.

Well folks, my last “masterpiece” as editor is done, and am so pleased with all the material I had for a final “tribute” to our dear departed friend Andy. ( Speaking of Andy, his sister Mary and I enjoyed a wonderful lunch recently, and had such a good time reminiscing about Andy, his band, his dear wife Ardy, and the wonderful memorial service held for him….memories no one can ever take away. ) Now, to my successor, ANN DeFORGE, I wish my very best and ask each of you to give her the support you have shown me over the years. TO ALL who want your events, flyers, etc., etc. published – send them to: ANN DeFORGE, 149 Cottage St. , Auburn , NY . 13021. I know this will take time and assure you anything I receive will be sent on, BUT please try and get into the habit of sending it to her yourself.

A big THANK YOU to SHIRLEY STEVENS for all of her help in making this transfer go so smoothly. Also, I would be remiss, if I didn't say thank you to my daughter Betty Jane, who has done so many things, all to make my work look so good, along with printing out the labels each month – She's looking for a rest also!!

I, like you will be watching for the January issue as it's been years since I didn't know every word in it! I also had to make sure that my address was added to the label printing. Remember, I am still going to take your memberships, and will be writing the RAMBLIN' column each month, so keep your news coming. Until my next visit – MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY NEW YEAR and may God bless you with all good things in 2008.

LAST MINUTE NEWS: Joanne Bartholemew's father passed away during the week of Nov. 18 th , and expressions of sympathy were sent from CNYBA, and know cards or notes of encouragement would be appreciated at: Dean Joanne Bartholemew, 2101 Addison Back Rd. , Addison , NY . 14801-9340. Expressions of sympathy wee also sent to Doc Williams, PO Box 902 , Wheeling , WV . 26003, on the passing of his dear wife “Chickie” on Sunday, Nov. 18 th . According to Bill Knowlton, her recording of “The Parlor Is A Pleasant Place To Sit On Sunday Night” has opened and closed the “Bluegrass Ramble” since 1973.

Per phone call from our president on Friday, Nov. 23 rd THERE WILL BE NO 10 th ANNUAL CNYBA BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL in 2008. He said this decision was necessary due to insufficient funds in our treasury.
