Ramblin' with Helen By Helen Weldon
Well, I hope the honor of having WHITE RAIN this morning (Oct. 22nd) was shared by many of you! I can tell you this person could very well do without that "STUFF" for a while yet, but of course wasn't consulted.
I am sure that many of you have heard that Smokey Greene got married in September. The wedding took place at Rick & Carol's Restaurant in West Port Ann, NY and was the second marriage for both Smokey and Midge Durfee who became Mrs. Smokey Greene. An acoustic legend of the northeast, Smokey has endeared himself to all of us throughout the years. For many years he always appeared in the Syracuse area in honor of the late Dave Cleaveland's Oct. birthday. Many of Smokey's relatives and friends were there, including the late Pat Greene's mother. A particularly moving moment in the wedding ceremony was Smokey's rendition of Hank Snow's "With This Ring I Thee Wed"- certainly most appropriate. Al and Kathy Bain sang a beautiful ballad that they had specifically written for the couple, highlighting the devotion the Greene's both had for their previous spouses and the wonderful future they now face together. Congratulations to both and may they share many happy years together.
A big thank you to Norman and Otilla Fey, and Dot Malouin for your generous extra donation when you renewed your memberships.
Also a Thank you is due Ronald and Catherine Roloson for their kind words and 2 books of stamps, and to EACH of you who include a SASE or extra stamp to return your card and receipt.
Our member Belle Brown suffered a stroke, but is coming along. I'm sure she'd appreciate a card or note: 21 South St., Camillus, NY 13031. Please keep her and other members (who requested not to be mentioned) in your prayers for a return to good health.
I'm a person who remembers faces but not always names to go with them, as was the case when I saw Winnie and David Jones at Arnold's Restaurant in Weedsport. Sorry folks, but it was good to see you and hear you have been enjoying your summer.
The answer to my question in the Oct. Ramblin' is HONEY. Had a nice note along with Ellen Owen's renewal saying it was a great summer for her while traveling all over every weekend to all the Bluegrass Shows. So glad Ellen, and hope you enjoy many more.
Dora Jean Tupper took a train trip from Utica to Old Forge recently, and while there saw posters that John Rossbach was going to appear at the Niccollo Memorial Church on Wed., Oct.2nd. She spoke about when she first joined, John used to perform for us, and wondered how come he never pays us a visit anymore. Dora, I don't know the answer, but perhaps our band committee can check into it. She is looking forward to our Christmas Party, as I hope many of you also are doing.
Thank you to Joe Cleveland for your emails regarding up-coming events in the Syracuse area; and assume some will appear elsewhere in this newsletter.
When Roy Murphy renewed, he asked me to THANK EVERYONE for our GREAT BLUEGRASS ASSOCIATION; so Roy, here it is.
Was so pleased to hear that Vernon and Olive Loucks were made Honorary Members of our association at the October meeting. It couldn't have happened to a more deserving couple, and congratulations were sent to them from the association. Olive is gaining slowly, but of course not nearly fast enough for her!
When Joan Spicer renewed her membership she changed it to a family one so, welcome Lloyd. She also wrote when she read "Ramblin with Helen" last month and saw an old friend's name - Harold Ferguson - it was a shock as they had been friends for 50 years ago. She contacted him and had a nice visit. I'm so glad my efforts helped you two to get in contact, Jean, and maybe you'll all see each other at the Christmas party as Harold expressed his hopes of being able to do so.
Don't have any other news to report, so if anyone knows of someone who should be remembered with a card, please let me know, either by phone: 626-2603 or by email: helwel80@hotmail.com. Right now my computer is working at a very slow snail's pace, but the weekend of Thanksgiving, if all goes as planned, my granddaughter and family are bringing me a different one. If I can keep my "cool" and "patience" until then, all will be much better I'm sure.
I did receive a long letter from Homer Reynolds recently, and he wants to be remembered to each of you who knew him. He says there are a lot of mosquitos down where he is and each of them are real hungry! He had a check-up with his heart Dr. in May and has to go back in Nov. for a nuclear stress test to see if the vein they found in May needs a piece of stainless steel inserted - if so, that will match the other 5 he already has in. We hope you don't have to have that done, Homer, but please keep us informed.
Well folks, this is it for this "visit", so until next time, remember: It is impossible to teach without learning something yourself.
Helen

PS: As the Editor of this newsletter, I thought that you all should know that Helen will be having carpal tunnel surgery on November 1. She is always so thoughtful about other people having surgeries, etc; how about a nice note or card to Helen while she recovers at home. You all know her address, but to make things easy, it is: 2446 Hillview Drive, #17, Cato, NY 13033. Also, a call might be nice at 315-626-2603. Thanks, Thayle
Also, got a call from Helen today (26th) to tell me that her computer has crashed, so if you want to contact her about any news, please either write her or call her. Her "new" computer should be set up and ready for email by December 1st.
I received an email from Bob Hayden stating that Sue's father is now in a nursing home and is sure that he would like to receive some cards and notes to brighten his days there. His address is: James Sawtell, Iroquois Home, 4600 Southwood Heights Drive, Jamesville, NY 13078-9595
Our doodle-doo fiddle playing member, Peter Hoysic suffered a stroke on the 25th. The reports from his children are that he is recovering nicely, still has his great sense of humor and has "hit on" all the nurses at the hospital. Way to go, Pete! A card or note sent to his home would help his recovery hasten - 7396 N. Centenary Road, Sodus, NY 14551.
