RAMBLIN’ with Helen...

Folks, I'm sorry this newsletter is a bit later in getting to you than I had planned, but on Thurs., July 6 th , I found myself “entertaining” a very bad case of the gout in my left big toe, and the pain just wouldn't allow me to even attempt to work on it. Fortunately, I had an appointment on the 7 th for a routine visit, so was able to get some medication, which I'm happy to report (on the 12 th ) has eased the pain considerably, and am now able to concentrate on what to write, etc. Thanks for being understanding.

As I sit here writing this visit, we have had steady hard rain since 9 a.m., and our driveway, back yard, etc. are all flooded. I hope and pray all of you are spared any severe problems during this downpour . The weather did not cooperate for our Annual Picnic at Mercer Park , but understand that 17 brave souls enjoyed a delicious meal and some good bluegrass music. THANKS to Bob and Sue Hayden for preparing the ham. Joy Crouch asked me to please ask anyone who was there to check and see if by error they have her large serving spoon, as she misses it!!

Also, Joy would like the recipe for the Cinnamon Syrup that someone brought to Ed and Cathy's Flyin' Fingers Gathering held at LaFayette on Memorial Day weekend. Her grandson loved it, as did she, and I know she will be a “happy camper” if she could get the recipe .

To Den Coty, Thomas & Renee Myers, and Ed Van Cott, Jr., a big THANKS to each of you for your monetary donations towards postage included with your renewals. Also, to Deanne Carpenter, Thomas Murray and Nancy Powderly, THANKS for your donation of stamps included with your renewals.

I had a phone call from a long-time member, Dick Ruger, asking if I had any information regarding the Orvell Gibson Festival, ( which I didn't and was unable to find anything on it). While visiting with him, he told me that recently, while he was attending calling hours for a friend, he met a former childhood sweetheart, and are now dating, and at 71, he feels like a teenager!! More power to you Dick, and we wish you both much happiness together.

Congratulations to Bill Knowlton, who was selected for introduction into the SAMMY Hall Of Fame on June 2 nd .

I received a nice note from Joe Marshall, along with his renewal, saying he and Gladys are doing as well as can be expected, and hoped to see me at our festival. Gladys went on a trip to New York City recently and had a great time. Joe worked there in 1969, said it was an experience and will probably never go back. I'm sorry I wasn't at the meeting Joe, but that was when I was spending time with my daughter in Syracuse when she fell and broke her shoulder.

Expressions of sympathy were extended to our president Ed Campbell and family on the sudden passing of his daughter Deborah on June 12 th . It just doesn't seem right for parents to have to loose their children, but I'm a firm believer that God needs both the young and elderly for his “Garden” in heaven. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Ed.

David Davis and The Warrior River Boys has a new CD on Rebel Records coming out in August. For more details, email: info@applause.intl.com . (Gert Rozelle, if you have a CD player, I know you will want this one!)

I had a nice visit with Emma Teachout this past week, and she says she stays about the same, and wanted to be remembered to you all. Her phone number is: 315-458-6057, and know she would enjoy a call now and them – days are long there.

My last report on Mary Anne Burns, was that she was back at St. Camillus, and was doing better, which I sincerely hope is still the fact.

Bob and Donna Walter have returned to their summer residence, reported a good trip north, and are looking forward to seeing all at our festival.

I've had a couple of emails from John Hornyak regarding the status of the health of our member Ed Horton. I sent a “Thinking Of You” card and note to his wife Pat, who is working a full-time job, going to see Ed at the nursing home daily, and is now also visiting Ed's father who is in a nursing home following a fall in the woods while cutting wood . I know a note of encouragement sent to Pat and Ed Horton at: 285 Grotsinger Rd. , Norwich , NY 13815 would be appreciated.

A telephone call to our dear members Vernon and Olive Louck, found them “hanging in there”, and hoping their health will enable them to come to our festival for a short while one day. We have you in our thoughts and prayers, folks, and hope you can join us, as you are a special couple to us all.

I have a wonderful article about our “Doodle-Do-Fiddler”, Pete Hoysic, that recently appeared in a Rochester paper, entitled “The Rody Man”, and have gotten permission from him to share it with all of you. I most certainly will do so starting with the September newsletter and continue in the October issue if space doesn't permit the whole article to appear at one time. (Ted, I've attempted several times to send email messages to you regarding how your dad was doing, reprinting of the mentioned article, etc. and each one is returned undeliverable…have you blocked me out for some reason? Please let me know, and thanks.)

Folks, I am asking you to please call me at: 315-626-2603 or email me at: helwel80@yahoo.com to let me know of any happenings, joys, sickness, etc. as so many tell me they enjoy reading bout our members even tho they don't personally know them. (THANK YOU).

The following is an email I received from Brenda Wrench on June 29 th : “The flooding here was terrible. Roads and bridges just washed away. Brainbridge and Afton are isolated and flooded – no getting in or out! All the towns are having problems, route 41 is closed with a bridge out. Our church is isolated with a bridge and road out. Route 235 has a bridge out plus 80 yards of road out..Lots of evacuating going on. You can't get through Afton on 41 or 7 even if you can get to them. Can't get to Sidney or Bainbridge on 7 or 206 or route 8, and things are pretty well shutdown up here. I88 had two sections of road and two bridges washed away, and two semis and drivers were lost. We toured as much as we could, and were shocked at the devastation. Some places looked like a bomb had gone off. Luckly we are high and dry on WrenchWranch. We have two culverts and one roadway to fix on our place from the rushing waters in the streams. Nothing costly or serious. We made it to Norwich today for some of my meds at WalMart, and the drive took over an hr. Just wanted to let you all know how we fared the storms, and hope all of you are okay.”

Well folks, OUR 8 th Annual APPLEVALLEY BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL will soon be here – I hope each of you did as I asked last month regarding what to do to help make it a success, and are planning on attending sometime during the weekend. SAT., AUG. 5 th will be the ONLY DAY I will be there this year, and ask all of you to be sure and stop by at the table – to renew your membership, join our association, or to just say hello. As I've said so many times, the members are like family to me and I look forward to seeing each of you. I may not remember your name, so just tell me who you are, and greeting you will make my day!! Don't forget to bring your saleable items to Joy's Flea Market Table – let's keep her busy!

Until our next visit – mark your calendar to attend our first meeting of our 31 st year on SUN., SEPTEMBER 11 th in Cato, and will SEE YOU AT OUR FESTIVAL on SAT., AUG. 5 th – I plan to be there from around 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. that day.
