Another leading light of the first generation of bluegrass artists has passed. George Shuffler, long time member of both The Stanley Brothers and Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys, passed away earlier today (4/7/14), just short of his 89th birthday.

Shuffler’s distinctive crosspicking guitar style, now a staple in bluegrass music, combined the melodic approach of Maybelle Carter and the 3-finger banjo roll into something unique and special, which will forever be tied to his name. Continue reading the article here.

Note from Betty Jane, Helen Weldon's daughter:

Latest update, March 17, regarding Helen: Good News! Mom had appointment with surgeon today and her hip has healed very well, and he is authorizing as much weight-bearing as tolerable on her leg to physical therapy today. Mom is saying she'll be home within two weeks...we'll see! I know she'll give it her all! Thanks for all the cards, well wishes, and prayers...she's appreciated them all.

This is Helen's daughter, Betty Jane, letting you know that Mom sustained a fall on Sunday, February 9, and fractured her hip. She had emergency surgery and everything went very well. The hip was realigned and 'screwed' back together--non-invasive with one small incision. She is doing well. She will be transferred tomorrow to Fingerlakes Center for the Living, 20 Park Ave., Auburn, NY 13021 for rehab.
So, until Mom is able to return to her computer, she'll have you all in her thoughts. I'm sure any greetings  of well wishes received would cheer her. Thanks.
Update: Mom was indeed transferred to Finger Lakes Center for the Living, 20 Park Ave., Auburn, NY 13201 today. Her room number is 111A and her phone number is 315.255.7431. She's scheduled to see the surgeon in a month and it's possible she will be here at least that long. I'll keep you posted as things proceed.
A second update: Just a quick note to let you know Mom has changed beds in her room to make it easier for her to get out of the bed--not trying to do so by rolling on her bad side. So, she's now at bed 111B and her new phone number is 315.255.7561. She's doing well. Therapy is really putting her through the ropes twice daily.
For you newer members, Helen has been a member of CNYBA from the beginning. She has served as our membership chair for many years. She continues to serve, though she cannot get to many meetings or events. We so appreciate her efforts.

Here's the latest update on Ray Delaney's situation:

They have stopped giving him chemo because it was making him so weak. The last scan, however, showed that the tumor has grown slightly. So without the chemo holding it back he needs our prayers more than ever. Although I think personally all those good positive and loving thoughts and prayers have been really what's helping him the most. So please do continue to pray for his complete and total healing. Who better to go down in the books of those miraculously cured than this wonderful man who has touched so many lives? We were so happy to see Ray and hear his outstanding harmonies at the Delaney Brother Dinner Show recently.
